Where You Come In
We are looking for a Director, Development to join our team at Make-A-Wish Canada. We are looking for a driven, energetic, and creative person who will identify and lead provincial fundraising strategies that includes individual philanthropy, events, digital activations, and corporate alliances, grows existing revenue as well as generates new revenue in alignment with Make-A-Wish® Canada’s (MAWC) strategic and annual plans.
Reporting into the Vice President, Central Canada, this position will create and maintain excellent relationships with donors across the province of Manitoba. The role collaborates closely with multi-region/market fundraising teams, the national development, corporate alliances and brand marketing & communications teams in driving resource development across the province in order to grow the mission.
This role is located in Winnipeg and is a full-time, permanent position.
What You Will Do
Drives the provincial fundraising strategy to align with overall MAWC strategic direction, in order to grow awareness, fundraising and mission year-over-year across the province; annual priorities to be determined in collaborative planning and budgeting process.
Monitors and evaluates development trends to identify new program opportunities and enhancements to increase the profile of the MAWC as the charity of choice for volunteers, sponsors and donors.
Collaborate with the National teams – development, corporate alliances and brand marketing & communications in driving resource development across the province.
Leads the development and management of relationships, including existing donors and potential donors, sponsors, media, and others, with a primary focus on developing revenue generation opportunities, ensuring MAWC is visible in the community and reaches its full fundraising and mission potential.
Participates in regional planning activities within the context of broader organizational plans; and creates a business plan to meet defined goals.
Leads the team in identifying, engaging, and stewarding new major donors and alliances in order to increase MAWC fundraising base across the province.
With the VP, Central Canada, collaborates in creating and working with volunteer and fundraising committees to engage new donors and partners.
Collaboratively develops and oversees provincial recognition and loyalty program for major donors, corporate sponsors and fundraising volunteers.
Leads and supports the provincial team in cultivating relationships with new and existing sponsors for major campaigns and events.
Acts as a representative of MAWC with the media, meetings and events as required.
Adheres to Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code.
Works in compliance with the provisions of The Occupational Health & Safety Act in the applicable province of employment and its regulations, and complies with the Foundation’s Health & Safety Policy.
Other duties and projects as assigned.
Volunteer Management Accountabilities
Provides guidance and leadership to the Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) in the execution of their responsibilities to promote MAWC in the community and support fundraising to grow wishes granted in their market/region.
Ensures a full complement of wish granting and fundraising volunteers and optimal stewardship to optimize their experiences and long-term retention in support of MAWC.
Collaborates with VP, Human Resources and national functional leads in ensuring appropriate selection, onboarding, training and recognition of volunteers.
Oversees staff in management of all volunteers, including office workers, fundraising and mission delivery volunteers, CAB committee members and subchapter teams.
Staff Management Accountabilities
Recruits, engages and retains qualified employees to meet business priorities.
Provides support and direction in the development, alignment and accomplishment of objectives through on-going performance feedback, recognition and coaching.
Provides a safe and healthy work environment for team members and relevant stakeholders; Ensures they work in compliance with The Occupational Health & Safety Act in applicable province of employment, its regulations, and the MAWC’s Health & Safety Policy.
Responsible for Provincial plan and budget as agreed upon in the annual collaborative planning and budgeting process.
Meets or exceeds revenue targets as agreed upon in the collaborative planning and budgeting process.
Monitors department adherence to financial policies and controls.
Determines expense projections as part of the budgeting and forecasting process.
Authorizes expenditures within approved guidelines. Monitors expenditures against budget and forecast and initiate appropriate remedial activity as required.
What You Bring
5-10 years executive leadership and management experience in a not-for-profit organization
A visionary, dynamic and collaborative leader able to influence and motivate stakeholders at all levels in the organization and community
Training in Non-Profit Sector Management and/or CFRE designation is an asset
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated success in strategic and annual planning, board development, donor cultivation and multi-channel fundraising; proven success in soliciting major and planned gifts
Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of community leaders, volunteers, donors, and other stakeholders
Experience and strong ability to work with and support a volunteer advisory board focused on resource development and awareness building
Strong organization, administrative and time management skills, able to address multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Integrity and an ability to maintain confidential information
Superior computer skills and high proficiency in MS Office and data management/CRM systems
Bilingualism in French and English (verbal and written) an asset
Works under pressure with multiple tight deadlines, demands, high volume workload, and dynamic/overlapping priorities
Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is a requirement for this position
A clear Criminal Background Check required

Your Work Environment
Primary responsibilities are carried out in the Chapter Office, however regularly required to be out of the office for visits with sponsors and donors, for site visits and attending events in the community
This position requires work outside or beyond traditional office hours and thus requires a flexible schedule year-round
High degree of responsibility including financial, staff, and operational demands
Emotional situations in dealing with wish recipients and families facing life threatening conditions or illnesses, in palliative care, and end-of-life stages.
