Position Details:

The primary responsibility as a lifeguard is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must be able to enforce pool policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place.

Position Summary and Scope of Service:

  • Reporting to the Supervisor, Volunteer Services, and consistent with the Mission, Values and Policies of St.Amant
  • Hours: This is a full-time, seasonal position requiring 8 hours per day (1 hour of unpaid break time),
  • Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend will may be required.
  • Actual hours and days will depending on operational needs, weather and events.



  • 6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • CPR Certified
  • Current certification as Lifeguard by a recognized source of training
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork
  • Must be able to provide clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening, Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks and Prior Contact Check
  • Must be willing to work outdoors
  • Proven reliability and willingness to work hard, possibly on weekends.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Motivated and capable of performing responsibilities and duties with a minimum of supervision
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of swimming pool sanitation and chlorination systems
  • Able to lift up to 25 lbs.


  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

Duties and Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Volunteer Services or delegate, the incumbent is responsible for all aspects of lifeguarding, assisting in the creation of program activities and making recommendations for program improvements.

  • Knowledge of PHIA in the performance of all duties
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Work as a team member
  • Able to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Able to work independently or with the team
  • Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment
  • Testing the pool water chemistry.
  • Assisting patrons (conducting safety orientations, administering swim tests and fitting life jackets).
  • Cleaning and performing maintenance within the COVID-19 Guidelines
  • Completing records and reports.
  • Performing opening duties, closing duties, facility safety checks and inspections
  • Creating safety videos
  • Creation of safety checklists, opening and closing duties checklist
  • Creation of online leisure activities
  • Creation of outdoor activities
  • Able to work with individuals with an intellectual and/or physical disability
  • Perform other appropriate duties, as may be assigned

As a Condition of Employment, new hires must complete a series of Occupational Health checks. This includes the requirement to confirm immunization or immunity of specific communicable diseases. Successful applicants will also be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination prior to start date.
