Program Support and Office Assistant

Best Buddies Canada is a national charity initiated in 1993 and dedicated to creating one-to-one friendships and leadership opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Best Buddies Canada has over 500 participating schools; including elementary, middle, high schools, colleges, and universities across the country. In elementary and middle schools, the program is run as a friendship club, while our high school program fosters strong one-to-one friendships between youth with and without IDD. In university and colleges, students are paired 1:1 with adults living with an intellectual or developmental disability through a community agency.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Executive Director, the ideal Program Support and Office Assistant candidate is an energetic individual with a passion for supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The position will engage schools and chapters across Canada (some travel may be required) and assist in providing an overview of the program and start-up for new chapters as well as supporting existing chapters. The position will also assist the Executive Director with research, writing, receipting, administrative assistance and donor relations (and other duties as required).

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide direct contact and support for Best Buddies chapters via telephone and email communication (in-person in the future)
  • Assist new chapters with start-up, resources and training
  • Contact program participants, chapter leaders, staff advisors to obtain updates and information
  • Updating and creating manuals
  • Assist with reference calls for new members
  • Assist with writing and communications
  • Assistance with office administration
  • Other duties as required

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to identify potential donors and grant opportunities.
  • Strong writing abilities and keen sense of detail. Impeccable spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the mission of Best Buddies Canada – both spoken and written.
  • Ability to write persuasively and strong story-telling that strengthens the organizations brand and profile.
  • Excellent research and collaboration skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as creativity and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to set clear priorities, design and complete complex projects, and manage time well without close day-to-day supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide superior chapter service and apply sound judgement when dealing with staff advisors and volunteers.
  • Willingness and capacity to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Education/Experience/Requirements (or equivalent)

  • University or College degree or diploma
  • Experience working with donors and/or volunteers
  • Previous experience with Best Buddies an asset
  • Must be fully vaccinated against Covid
  • Must have a valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete and pass a criminal record check
