Job Summary: *

Under the general supervision of the Vocational Counsellor Supervisor, and indirectly to the Associate Program Director, the Vocational Counsellor–Disabilities & Addictions (VC) is responsible for supporting people with disabilities and/or addictions to choose, get. keep volunteer, education, or employment placements in a mainstream community setting.

The VC provides general employment services, along with specialized disability vocational services (coordinates specialized assessments and acquisition of assistive technology; completes “Discoveries” and facilitates customized employment placements; disability/addiction skill development, along with drafting a disability/addiction management plan); provides workplace assessment and recommendations for modifications/accommodations to support client/candidate achieve their employment goals.

Duties: *

  • Engages in employment goal setting, case management, and ongoing support activities by providing general, traditional career decision making (informal needs assessment, values/interests/aptitude testing, and labour market review) processes or specialized career decision making processes for people with disabilities (“Discovery”, establishing vocational themes, and drafting an employment profile).
  • Organizes the procurement of specialized assessments, debriefs with assessors, reviews findings with client/candidate, and incorporates findings into goal setting process.
  • Organizes the procurement of assistive technology to support clients/candidates to fully participate in programs and services.
  • Observes clients, identifies, and assesses potential emergency situations, and develops short-term strategies to deal with such situations.
  • Provides counselling and behavioral management techniques to assist clients/candidates in establishing strategies to seek, obtain, and maintain employment.
  • Teaches client/candidate and provide coaching using a variety of instructional methodologies to enable the development of disability management, employment readiness, and employment skills. Drafts and reviews with each client/candidate a disability management plan.
  • Assist clients to become ready for further education and/or self-employment. Assist in researching and applying for funding to support in the payment of education and/or self-employment.
  • Ensure clients/candidates have access to the necessary skills and resources to engage in a employment search process.
  • Facilitates the placement of clients/candidates by performing duties such as directly approaching education institutions and/or employers to identify and secure opportunities, explain wage subsidy information and placement terms to clients and community agencies/employers.
  • Negotiates with employers customized employment placements.
  • Provides workplace assessments to determine full-scope of duties and specialized requirements, develops strategies with employers and/or candidates to support successful employment retention. Coordinates job coaching where required.
  • Makes recommendations for workplace modifications/accommodations; identify funding sources to support the implementation of workplace recommendations/accommodations.
  • Follow up with employers and education providers to ensure education, work experience, employment placements and agreements are established and maintained, and to monitor the quality of placements.
  • Ensure Open Door Group participants and colleagues receive written assessments, progress reports and evaluations as required by program standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring that relevant statistical, program and student/participant reports are processed accurately, reflect professional quality and adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Participate in annual review and development of goals and objectives for Open Door Group training programs.
  • Participate in the review and development of systems to ensure quality services are provided to Open Door Group participants, employers, and other customers.
  • Achieve monthly and annual goals and objectives and maintain acceptable standards of service quality.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences or a relevant allied health discipline.
  • Two years experience including vocational counselling for people with people with disabilities.
  • Valid B.C. driver’s license and use of personal vehicle during working hours.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the province.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Addiction counselling experience is considered an asset.
  • As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Open Door Group must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.

  • Demonstrated ability to demonstrate creative methods in discovering unique contributions of the person served and how that information could be translated into a customized employment setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the demands of a varied and large client load.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct and to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately maintain client files and ability to proficiently use Microsoft Office programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to a diverse range of people.
